Charity Events and Fundraising
MacDonagh Junction proudly stands as a community hub dedicated to making a positive impact through fundraising. Since our opening in 2007, we have played an active role in supporting local charities by hosting a variety of charity collections. Our partnerships with fashion shows and our ongoing food and toy drives have successfully benefited organizations such as St. Vincent de Paul, the Newpark Family Resource Centre, and the Amber Women’s Refuge. Together, we can continue to uplift our community and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
O'Loughlin Gales camogie club
MacDonagh Junction proudly stands as the principal sponsor of the O’Loughlin Gales Camogie Club in St. John’s Parish. This year, the club marks a significant milestone—celebrating 30 remarkable years since its founding in 1991. With nearly 250 members, O’Loughlin Gales boasts the second-largest membership in Kilkenny, a testament to its vibrant community and commitment to the sport. In 2019, the club achieved a historic triumph by winning the junior county camogie championship for the very first time and has since elevated its standing to intermediate status. The ambition for the future is clear: the club is determined to reach senior status and compete among the elite teams in the coming years. Juvenile camogie at O’Loughlin Gales starts at just under 6 years old, progressing biannually through to under 18. Players then transition to the adult under 21 team and intermediate squads, ensuring a continuous pathway for talent development. Impressively, three of the club’s players are currently representing the Kilkenny senior camogie team, highlighting the club’s dedication to excellence and its capacity to nurture top-tier athletes.
Happy to help
The Happy To Help project is a community support initiative launched in MacDonagh Junction in March 2014. Developed by Access (SOS Ltd), the project addresses the need for social opportunities within the local community. All individuals supported by Access are already active in their communities, working for various organizations throughout Kilkenny. However, each person expressed a desire for greater independence and a more varied and interesting lifestyle. A key component of this initiative is fostering friendships and promoting independence.
Creating a supportive environment was vital for the success of our program, and we firmly believe that partnering with a key community supporter was the most effective way forward. MacDonagh Junction, the largest shopping center in Kilkenny, offers a dynamic and engaging atmosphere for both shopping and leisure. It is the perfect destination for people looking to connect with friends over coffee, lunch, or a bit of retail therapy—all within a safe and welcoming space. We approached Marion Acreman, the former manager of the shopping center, and she wholeheartedly embraced our initiative, rallying her team to support our efforts. MacDonagh Junction has organized comprehensive training sessions for all support staff, including security and maintenance personnel, to ensure they are equipped to help everyone navigate the center with confidence and ease. Numerous shops have eagerly joined our initiative as “Happy to Help” points, proudly displaying “Happy to Help” stickers. Their staff members are ready and willing to assist shoppers throughout the center, ensuring that everyone feels supported while enjoying time with friends. Together, we are creating a community that prioritizes safety, assistance, and connection for all visitors.
